The Wrong Purity Spec for the Right Application

Most alcohols and glycols are available in multiple purity grades. The problem isn’t usually finding the compound — it’s matching the purity grade to the application.
 
A pharmaceutical excipient buyer in Japan ordered 1-Nonanol (CAS 143-08-8) from a Chinese supplier quoting “industrial grade.” The price was attractive. The purity was 99%. What the quote didn’t include was that industrial grade had no specification for endotoxin levels, microbial contamination, or heavy metals — all three of which were in their excipient specification.

Quality Parameters by Application

For technical/industrial use: GC purity, water content, color (APHA), and density.
 
For pharmaceutical excipient or API synthesis use: add USP/EP/JP grade specification, endotoxin limits, heavy metals specification, residual solvents per ICH Q3C, and microbiological testing.
 
For cosmetic use: cosmetic-grade certification, skin irritation data, and often natural origin documentation.

Storage Considerations

Most alcohols are hygroscopic — they absorb water from the atmosphere. Open drums and reseal properly. If you’re using it in a water-sensitive synthesis, test the water content on each container before use, not just on the original CoA.
