Is Orange Essential Oil Safe For Dogs?

The Secret to Pet-Friendly Essential Oils Lies in Their Ingredients

Pet owners may not be aware that raw orange essential oils are often the source of product safety. We are a manufacturer of essential oil raw materials. As such, we know that the downstream brands’ claims about “low irritation” and “pet safe” come down to quality and ingredient control.

The pet essential oil industry has boomed in recent years. This has led to a surge in demand for “pet friendly orange essential oil raw material”. A common misconception in the industry is the idea that raw material suppliers supply essential oils intended for humans directly to pet product manufacturers, ignoring fundamental differences between the physiological metabolism of dogs and humans. The limonene level in orange essential oil is as high as 90 percent. This may not pose a health risk to humans, but can be dangerous for dogs who do not have the enzymes necessary to metabolize this compound. This article analyzes the effects of orange oil on dogs, from the raw material perspective. It will also show how high-quality materials are the foundation of the safety of downstream products.

What Indicators Determine Pet Suitability?

🍋From Orange Peel to Raw Materials: How Does Extraction Process Impact Composition?
Orange essential oil is produced by extracting the active ingredients and purifying them from orange peels. There are currently two main processes used in the industry, cold pressing and distillation. These two processes determine the composition of raw materials.

(1)Cold pressing, or physical compression, is a method of extracting essential oils that retains between 85% and 95% limonene. Also, it contains high levels aldehydes like citronellal or neral. Its rich aroma makes this material suitable for human perfumes and cleaning products. Direct use of this raw material as a pet product is not recommended due to the high level of irritations.
(2)The distillation process, which involves heating oil to 60-80degC in order to extract the oil, breaks down some of the limonene. This reduces the limonene level from 70-80%. Aldehydes also reduce by 10-15%. This significantly reduces irritation, making the raw material more suitable for use as a base in pet-friendly products. Our raw material production line utilizes a “gradient temperature-controlled distillation process.” We can achieve a stable limonene level of 65 to 70% by precisely controlling the temperature of the distillation (adjusted in small steps between 50degC and 60degC) while maintaining an appropriate amount of Linalool (5 to 8%) to neutralize irritation. Third-party verification has shown that this composition ratio reduces irritation on dog skin by 40 percent compared to standard raw materials.

🍋The “Safety Threshold of Limonene”: how are standards for raw materials set
When evaluating raw materials of orange essential oils for pet products, the limonene content plays a major role. Even after dilution of the raw material, extensive experimental data shows that if the limonene level exceeds 75% there is still 30% risk for skin irritation to occur in dogs. When the content is kept below 70%, irritation risks are reduced to 5%. We set the limonene level for “pet-friendly essential oils raw materials” at =70%. This is a standard that has been adopted by leading pet product manufacturers. The safety of limonene is not solely dependent on its content, but also its oxidative strength. Air exposure causes raw materials to oxidize over time and form peroxides. These peroxides cause three times as much irritation as unoxidized limonene. In order to address this problem, we add 0.1% of natural vitamin E before shipping. This increases the shelf-life of the raw materials by 18 months, while reducing the oxidation rate to 60%.

What Raw Material Problems can Cause Discomfort to Pets?

How do We Control it From the Source?

1️⃣Raw Material Testing – Multi-Dimensional Indices Beyond “Purity”.
It is not enough to check the “purity” of an orange essential oil batch before deciding whether it will be suitable for pet products. We have developed a four-dimensional test system
1. Ingredient Content: Limonene <= 70%, Citronellal + Neraldehyde <= 15%, Linalool >= 5%;
2. Impurity Control Wax = 0.1 %, Heavy Metals = 0.01/kg (Lead and Mercury), Pesticide Residues = 0.001 mg/kg (Organophosphorus);
3. Irritation Test: The rabbit skin irritation test was passed (Draize Method) with a score =0.5 (non-irritating);
4. Oxidative stability: Peroxide concentration = 0.1% at 37degC after 12 weeks of accelerated testing.
Every batch of raw materials is shipped with a report that covers these four indicators. Standard essential oil testing rarely includes oxidative stability and irritation testing data, but these are important for pet products.

2️⃣Customized production: Adjusting raw material parameters based on downstream demand
The raw materials required for different pet products are also different: pet spray ingredients need to be less volatile (to avoid excessive inhalation of dogs), while cleaners must have a certain detergency level (positively related to limonene). We offer “parameter customisation services” based on this:
1. Customers who purchase pet sprays: We can reduce limonene to 60-65% in the raw material and add 2% to 3% of a sustained release agent to extend the fragrance release. This will reduce the frequency of usage.
2. Customers of pet toy cleaners: We limit the limonene to 70% in order to maintain detergency, while adding 1% Vitamin E to reduce irritation.
3. Customers who want high-end shampoos for sensitive dogs can use “dealdehyde treated raw materials”, which reduce the citronellal content and neral to less than 5%.
This model of customized production helps downstream brands to find the perfect balance between “functionality and safety.”

How to Support Downstream Product Compliance?

Orange Essential Oil

📌Providing raw material data related to pet safety
To support their “pet friendly” claims, downstream brands require solid raw material data. Our clients receive not only test results but also:

Data on skin irritation for different dilutions of the raw material (e.g. reactions to 1:500 or 1:1000 concentrations);
Results of compatibility testing with ingredients commonly found in pet products (e.g. aloe extract and glycerin)
Animal safety assessment reports (non-in vivo tests) based upon OECD standards.
These data help brands reduce risks when developing formulations, and provide a scientific foundation for product filings. Our compatibility data was used by a client to formulate a raw material and a pet-specific moisturiser, resulting in a product that passed EU safety certification for pet products (EC 1223/2009).

📌Setting up a Raw Material Traceability System
We are a responsible supplier and have implemented a full-chain tracking system. Each batch of raw materials can be tracked back to its specific production location, including the orange orchards (we work with orchards located in Jiangxi, Hunan, to ensure that the orange peels do not contain pesticides), the extraction batches, the testing records and the logistics information. Customers downstream can scan the code and get the full traceability report. This ensures transparency in the supply chain as well as allowing quick troubleshooting when problems arise.

3 Key Dimensions for Selecting Pet-Friendly Orange Essential Oil

📝Inspect process stability: Can the ingredient ratios be consistently controlled?

For buyers, process stability is the primary criterion for selecting raw materials. Some suppliers may occasionally produce low-limonene raw materials, but batch-to-batch consistency cannot be guaranteed, leading to fluctuations in downstream product quality. Our production line utilizes an automated temperature control system and conducts hourly sampling and ingredient testing to ensure that the limonene content of each batch of raw materials fluctuates within ±3% and the aldehyde content fluctuates ≤ ±2% year-round, providing customers with a stable supply of raw materials.

📝Check safety certifications: Have they passed pet-related testing?

Ordinary essential oil raw materials often only have “food grade” or “cosmetic grade” certifications, but pet-friendly raw materials require more professional certification. In addition to SGS heavy metal and pesticide residue testing, our raw materials also pass:

GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) certification from the US FDA (for pet contact);

Testing for the 16 restricted substances in “pet product raw materials” under the EU REACH regulation;

Complying with all requirements of the domestic “Safety Technical Specifications for Pet Cosmetic Raw Materials” (Trial Implementation). These certifications ensure that the raw materials meet the compliance requirements for pet products in different regions.

📝Technical Support: Can we provide downstream application solutions?

High-quality raw material suppliers should not only be “sellers” but also “technical partners.” We provide three value-added services to our customers:

Formulation Recommendations: Based on the customer’s product type (spray, shampoo, environmental cleaner), we recommend the optimal raw material addition ratio (e.g., 1%-2% for sprays and 0.5%-1% for shampoo);

Compatibility Testing: Free testing of raw materials for compatibility with other formulation ingredients to avoid issues such as separation and accelerated oxidation;

Emergency Response: If pets experience discomfort in downstream products, we can assist in analyzing the raw material-related factors and provide improvement solutions.

📞To date, we have provided raw material support to over 200 pet product brands, 80% of which have received “pet-friendly” certifications due to the advantages of their raw materials. As a raw material manufacturer, we firmly believe that only by controlling ingredients and quality from the source can we ensure that downstream “pet-friendly” claims are implemented and jointly promote the standardized development of the pet essential oil market.
