Protection of the carbonyl group from strong bases or nucleophiles: The sulfur atom in 1,4-disulfide can reversibly react with carbonyl compounds (like aldehydes and ketones) to form thioacetals/ketones. The protection can then be removed by hydrolysis or oxidation (like HG – ²).
Construction of sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds: as a precursor to the preparation of thiophene, dithioester and other sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds, used in the synthesis of drugs (such as antibiotics, anti-tumor drugs) and functional materials.
