At room temperature, the compound is a white or light yellow solid with a melting range of 62-65degC. It is only slightly soluble, but readily soluble, in organic solvents like ethanol and Acetone. Under alkaline conditions its cyano group can easily be hydrolyzed into a carboxylic acids, or converted to an amino group in reducing conditions. It is a key building block in organic synthesis.

Manufacturing pesticides: Take part in the synthesis and cyclization of the phenyl-ether structure for pyrethroid insecticides or the heterocyclic skeletons of triazole fungalicides.
Research and development of anticancer drugs: its derivatives are used to optimize the structure of protein kinase (such as CDK4/6 inhibitors).

Liquid crystal monomer: 4-Methoxybenzonitrile is used as a polar mesogen unit in nematic liquid crystal compositions of TFT-LCD displays (such as mixing with diphenyl cyanide compounds to adjust dielectric anisotropy).
Polymer materials: polycondensation cyano-diamine to produce high temperature resistant fibers of polyamide, or as crosslinker modified components of UV curing coats.
