Alpha-Bisabolol is also known as sesquiterpenoids and sweet bisabolol. It has two different structures: the a-body, and the b-body. Alpha-Bisabolol can be found in chamomile and other chamomile-like plants. It is used primarily as an anti-inflammatory agent and soother in cosmetics and personal-care products. Bisabolol is also the main source of the anti-inflammatory effects of chamomile. Chamomile essential oils can contain as much as 17%.

Alpha-Bisabolol inhibits the production of peroxidase which is the substance that causes inflammation. It has an inhibitory effect both on acute and chronic inflammation. Literature reports indicate that bisabolol depigmentation is caused by the cAMP pathway in melanocytes. This involves inhibiting CREB phosphorylation, the production of tyrosinase and transcription factors, as well as inhibiting aMSH-induced pigmentation. In a clinical study, the backs of subjects were exposed to ultraviolet light in order to cause pigmentation. Then, a cream containing 0.5% bisabolol (0.5% bisabolol) was applied every day. The cream with bisabolol significantly reduced the skin’s color.

The three-dimensional model of skin showed that Alpha-Bisabolol could reduce PMA-induced leukotriene LTB4 as well as interleukin IL-1a. However, it did not inhibit the production of prostaglandins PGE2. It also reduced chemical-induced edema in rats paws, ultraviolet-induced erythema in guinea pigs, decreased NaOH and SDS skin irritation on human skin and relieved skin irritation.
Anti-Cancer
Alpha-Bisabolol can downregulate the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2, MMP-9) of tumor migration factor c-Met and its downstream molecules in a concentration-dependent manner to inhibit the migration and spread of glioblastoma, achieving an anti-cancer effect.
Alpha-Bisabolol also has anti-cancer properties on A549NSCLC (IC50 =15 mM), by causing cell cycle arrest, mitochondrial death, and blocking the PI3K/Akt pathway. It can therefore effectively induce the apoptosis in glioma cell.
Liver Protection
Alpha-Bisabolol reduces the number of apoptotic cells in the liver caused by acetaminophen. It has therefore anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic effects on acute liver injury caused by APAP.
