Anise Oil, a natural spice oil, is extracted from the leaves or fruit of star anise. It is a light yellow or colorless volatile oily liquid that has antibacterial, analgesic and insecticidal effects.
Anise oil is a clear, colorless liquid that can be extracted from the fresh leaves or fruits of star anise. It has a pungent, sweet, and aromatic aroma. Anise Oil can become turbid or crystallized when stored in the cold. This will clear up after heating. It is slightly soluble, but easily soluble, in water. Pour point shouldn’t be below 15 and relative density should be between 0.975-0.988. The optical rotation should not be more than +1 deg and should not be less than -2 deg.
Anethole, or star anise, is the main component in Anise Oil, and it accounts for 80-90%. The Chinese names of the compound are para pyruvic, senbai, senxue, and anethole. Trans anethole differs from cis anethole. There are also differences in anise acids, anise acids, wolfberry, camphora, linalool and anise-ketone. Anise oil’s flavor is defined by anethole and wormwood. Fennel brain solidifies as white crystals at low temperatures. It is a colorless liquid or pale yellow. Its refractive index (n20) is 1.553-1.555. Its specific gravity D15 is between 0.980 and 0.994.

1. Antioxidant effect
Anise Oil has a good antioxidant activity and is a natural scavenger of free radicals. The volatile oil from star anise is a good antioxidant. It is also found that star anise extracts using ethanol-water as solvent have the highest antioxidant activity.
2. Antibacterial effect
Anise Oil’s antibacterial effects have been extensively studied, and the antibacterial mechanism of Anise Oil discussed and analysed to some extent. Antibacterial tests were performed on star anise oils using the filter paper and plate diffusion methods. The anise extract with ethanol was found to have a strong antibacterial effect against some common pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus Aureus, Escherichia Coli, Bacillus subtilis and Hansen yeast. Anise oil also has an antibacterial effect against common clinical pathogenic Candida. Studies have shown a synergistic combination of star anise and fluconazole to be effective against Candida. Anise Oil has a similar antibacterial effect as well, even on Candida krusei or Candida glabrata that are not sensitive azoles. Anise Oil inhibits dermatophytes in vitro. The star anise essential oils has a powerful antifungal effect, which could be due to the presence of anethol in its chemical composition.
3. Insecticidal effect
Anise Oil is a powerful fumigation agent against red flour insects. The mortality rate for red flour beetles adult is 100%. It can compensate for the harmful environment created by chemical pesticides. After 24h of fumigation with 50mg/l of anise, the mortality of adult red flour beetles is 100%. Even when the dosage is reduced from 50mg/l to 10mg/l the mortality rate remains at 80%. The oil of star anise has a high biological activity, is low-toxic to humans and animals, leaves a small residue and does not pollute the environment. It can also be used to store grain and prevent insects.
4. Analgesic effect
The effects are significant when a high concentration is used. It is non-addictive, has anti-inflammatory properties, and is a central nervous system action.
5. Increased white blood cell count
In medicine, preparations made from anisic acids, which is the main component of Anise Oil are called Shengbaining or Shengxuening. It increases white blood cell production by promoting the release of mature white cells from the bone marrow. It is used to treat leukopenia in cancer patients who have received chemotherapy or radiotherapy, as well as other causes of leukopenia.
6. Other effects
Anise Oil contains anisole, which has strong sensitization and estrogen-like properties.
