Benzaldehyde, also known as benzoinaldehyde, is an organic compound formed when the hydrogen of benzene is replaced by an aldehyde group. Two molecules of benzaldehyde can form benzoin in the presence of potassium-cyanide by accepting and donating hydrogen atoms. Benzaldehyd undergoes electrophilic substitute reactions on aromatic nuclei. This produces primarily meta-substituted compounds. For example, m-nitrobenzaldehyde is the main product of nitration. Benzaldehyde can be prepared by different methods from toluene.
