Benzyl mercaptan, also known as thiobenzyl alcohol, benzyl mercaptan, benzyl mercaptan, and α – mercaptotoluene. It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid. It smells like onions. It is prone to oxidation in air, forming dibenzyl disulfide. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in ethanol and ether. It is toxic. Irritating to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.
Benzoyl mercaptan is mainly used to synthesize other compounds with certain activity, such as thioamino acid esters, whose scientific name is o-alkyl-n-alkylthioamino acid esters. It is an excellent flotation agent for sulfide minerals. Compared with traditional sulfide collectors such as yellow medicine and black medicine, it has the advantages of good selectivity, small dosage, and foaming. It can effectively separate valuable minerals and gangue minerals under low alkaline conditions. Widely used in the flotation of copper, gold, lead and zinc ores, it is a non-ionic sulfide collector widely used and studied in flotation.

1. Important intermediates for organic synthesis
Groups that protect mercaptan: In strongly acidic or reductive environments, the -SH group of methyl mercaptan can protect carbonyl molecules such as aldehydes and ketones to form stable mercaptan/ketones that are further shielded by oxidation (e.g. H2O2, NBS) or mercury salts (HgCl2).
Synthesis of sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds: Benzyl mercaptan is used as a source of sulfur to help build heterocyclic compounds such as thiophene and benzothiazole, which are used to make drugs (including antibacterial and anti-tumor chemicals) and pesticides.
Nucleophilic: In order to produce sulfides (such as phenylene sulfide), nucleophilic substitution/addition processes occur with halogenated hydrocarbons or alkenes.
2. Polymer Materials Chemistry
Polymer modification: In free radical polymerization (such as rubber vulcanization), phenylmercaptan is used as a crosslinking agent or chain transfer agent (CTA) to modify molecular weight or improve the heat resistance of the material.
Surface modification: Au-S bonds self-assemble to form monolayers (SAM) for functionalizing electrode surfaces, biosensors, and nanomaterials.
3. Biochemistry and Medicine
Drug synthesis: Sulfur-containing drugs, including immunomodulators and penicillin derivatives, are manufactured with benzoyl mercaptan as a precursor.
Protein studies: Benzyl mercaptan is used in the mercaptan disulfide exchange reaction of proteins, or as a reducing agent to protect the mercaptan group of the active center of the enzyme.
4. Fragrances and industrial applications
Aroma intermediates: Although the smell is strong, its derivatives (such as benzene sulfide) can be used to prepare onion and garlic aroma.
Industrial deodorant: Methyl mercaptan reacts with odorous sulfides (such as H2S) to neutralize odors.
