The chemical formula of benzylalcohol (C7H8O) is an aromatic alcohol. The molecular structure of benzylalcohol is a benzene group connected to an hydroxymethyl (-CH2OH) group. It is transparent and colorless at room temperature. It has a mild, light almond-like scent.
Physically, Benzylalcohol is a liquid at room temperature. It has a boiling point of 205.3degC and a melting of -15.3degC. It has a selectivity in its solubility: it is soluble with all organic solvents including ethanol and chloroform in any proportion, but only very slightly in water at 20degC (solubility about 4g/100mL). Benzylalkohol has the same chemical properties as alcohols. It can be esterified with carboxylic acid to form benzyl ester, or oxidized (by potassium permanganate), to produce benzaldehyde, followed by benzoic acids. Due to the presence of benzene, it is also capable of electrophilic substitutions unique to aromatic rings, such as nitration or sulfonation. The reaction activity of the benzene rings is altered. Its chemical properties are stable, and the ring is resistant to light or temperature changes.
