Butyl mercaptan is volatile and slightly soluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. Due to its high volatility and detectable odor at very low concentrations, it is commonly used as an odorant for natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas to warn of gas leaks. It can be obtained commercially by the reaction of butanol with hydrogen sulfide or halogenated butane with sodium hydrogen sulfide.
