Phenethyl salicylate, with the chemical formula C₁₅H₁₄O₃, is an organic ester compound, which is formed by the esterification of salicylic acid (o-hydroxybenzoic acid) and phenylethanol. It is white to light yellow crystals or powder at room temperature, with a sweet and slight floral scent like roses, hyacinths, and carnations. Its melting point is 39-41°C, boiling point is about 370°C, density is 1.154 g/mL, slightly soluble in water, and easily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.
The structure of this compound contains a benzene ring, an ester group, and a hydroxyl group, which makes it both aromatic and polar. In nature, phenethyl salicylate exists in small amounts in some plant essential oils, but it is mainly obtained by chemical synthesis in industry. It has good stability, but hydrolysis may occur under strong acid or strong base conditions.
