Cinnamyl chloride is also known as 3-chloro-1-phenylpropene and cinnamoyl chloride. Crystals in needle shape or colorless liquid. Weight molar 152.62. Melting point 8-9degC. It is used in pharmaceuticals as an intermediate.
Cinnamyl is obtained by chloromethylation from styrene, which can then be heated with urotropine in order to produce aromatic aldehydes such as cinnamaldehyde. Cinnamaldehyde can be used to flavor cinnamon, apple, cherry and plum. It is also added to cola, roses, lily-of-the valley, rosewater, and apricot.
