At room temperature, diphenoxymethane is a yellowish oily liquid with a boiling range of 292-293degC. It is miscible in most organic solvents, such as alcohol, Ether, and Acetone. Acetal compounds are important intermediates, and chemical raw materials in organic synthesis. Oil additives can be made without causing environmental harm. They can be directly oxidized under suitable catalyst conditions to synthesize molecular carbonates.
Dimethyl sulfoxide is used as a solvent in the traditional method of synthesising diphenoxymethane. The raw materials are phenol, dichloromethane, or diiodomethane. A phase transfer catalyst, sodium hydroxide, under alkaline conditions, is then added to produce diphenoxymethane. Dimethyl sulfoxide is used in the traditional method as a solvent. This makes it difficult to separate the product. Dichloromethane or diiodomethane is used as the raw material. The reaction time and yield are low.

1. Flavor and fragrance industry
Diphenylmethane is a base fragrance for low-end perfumes, soaps and detergents. It has a floral and balsamic smell. It is stable in chemical properties and can be easily integrated with other fragrances. It is especially suitable as a fixative for prolonging the persistence of fragrance. It can also be synthesized to make more complex molecules of fragrance, like benzophenone.
2. Drug intermediates and synthesis
Diphenylmethane, a key organic synthesis intermediate, is used in the pharmaceutical industry to synthesize drugs like antihistamines and anti-inflammatory drugs. It is, for example, one of the main precursors in the synthesis “Diphenhydramine”, an anti-allergic medication. Its methylene structure (–CH2- –) can be functionalized further to introduce active groups like hydroxyl or amino groups in order to increase the diversity of drug molecule.
3. Dyes and fluorescent brighteners
