Ebanol (3-methyl-5-(2,2,3-trimethyl-3-cyclopenten-1-yl)pent-4-en-2-ol, also known as methylcyclopentanol) is a fragrance with a very full and strong natural sandalwood aroma. Ebanol is prepared by first condensing the borneol with 2-butanone, then isomerizing it with potassium tert butoxide to transpose the double bonds, and finally reducing the product with sodium borohydride, resulting in a mixture consisting of four isomers that are not corresponding. Patent CN103483151A describes a method of preparing Ebanol that uses methyl ethyl ketone as the initial raw material, followed by a reaction to isomerize it in a solution containing sodium methoxide. The isomeric compound then undergoes hydrogenation with sodium borohydride and is produced in a methanol-based solution.
