Ferulic acid (English: Ferulic acid, 4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid or 3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-propenoic acid) is a hydroxyphenylpropenoic acid, which is a rich phenolic phytochemical component present in plant cell walls, for example, it exists in the covalently connected side chains of arabinoxylan.
Ferulic acid is a phenolic acid extracted from the resin of Ferula asafoetida. Ferula asafoetida is a seasonal herbaceous plant of the Umbelliferae family with a strong garlic scent. It grows in sandy locations and is primarily produced in Xinjiang. When it is first birthed, it just has roots and leaves, and flower stems begin to grow in the fifth year. The blossom stems are thick and up to 2 meters high; from the optimal blooming period in late spring and early summer season to the first fruiting duration, cut obliquely from the top part of the stem downwards in sets, accumulate the radiated milklike resin, and dry in the shade. Ferula has volatile oil, resin and periodontal, etc. The oil includes a variety of natural acid compounds, such as (R)-sec-butyl 1-propenyl disulfide, 1(1-methylthiopropyl)1-propenyl disulfide, sec-butyl 3-methylthioallyl disulfide, and so on. The material includes ferulic acid and its esters.

The Effects of Ferulic Acids on the Skin
Anti-melanin
Ferulic acid has been shown to inhibit or reduce melanocyte proliferation. Ferulic solution containing 0.1-0.5% can reduce melanocytes’ number from 117+23/mm2 down to 39+-7/mm2. At the same time, it can inhibit the activity tyrosinase. 5mmol/L of ferulic solution can inhibit tyrosinase by as much as 86%. Even when the concentration of the ferulic solution is only 0.5mmol/L the inhibition rate can reach 35%.
Antioxidant
Ferulic acid has been shown to promote the production of glutathione, and nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide-phosphate (NADP), which are antioxidants. This eliminates free radicals while reducing damage from ultraviolet rays. It is likely that UV rays produce free radicals, which are electrons attached to our skin. NADP works with other ingredients in order to eliminate these free radicals.
Sunscreen
There is also evidence that ferulic acids can absorb ultraviolet rays between 290 and 330 nm. This prevents or reduces the damage caused by ultraviolet rays at this wavelength. It also has sunscreen properties.
