Isopropenyl acetate is a chemical intermediate. Isopropenyl isoacetate is used primarily in organic synthesis. Isopropenyl isoacetate can be used as an intermediate in the production of acetylacetone. Isopropenyl Acetate is miscible with ethanol, ether, and non-volatile oil. It is soluble in water but not soluble. It can be used to dissolve plastics, fibers, oils, and fats. It is allowed as an edible flavoring according to GB2760-1996. It is used primarily as a solvent in the preparation of rum flavor and fruits flavoring. Isopropenyl Acetate is used in medicine as a solvent to refine or as a electronic grade for Fucoxanthin products. It can also be used an extraction solvent.
Under certain conditions, polymerization may occur due to the unsaturated bonds present in the isopropenyl-acetate molecule. As an example, a small quantity of azoisobutyronitrile is added to pure isopropyl acetate monomer (IPA). The dosage is 0.1% IPA. After 12 hours of vacuum at 60degC and closed conditions, 6.5% monomer has been converted. To obtain polyisopropyl-acetate (PIPA), the crude polymer must be precipitated in acetone and then dried under vacuum. From isopropyl anhydride and isopropyl anhydride, it is possible to synthesize isopropyl anhydride-maleic copolymers.
