Methanethiol, with the chemical formula CH₃SH, is a sulfur-containing organic compound belonging to the class of thiols. It consists of a methyl group (CH₃) and a sulfhydryl group (SH) and is well known for its pungent odor, similar to rotten cabbage or rotten eggs.
Chemically, methylthiol is a colorless, flammable gas with a boiling point of 6°C and a molecular weight of 48.11 g/mol. In air, it is easily oxidized to form disulfides. Due to the presence of sulfhydryl groups (–SH) in the molecule, methylthiol can react with metal ions and oxygen and can be oxidized to methyl sulfide (CH₃-S-CH₃) or other sulfides under certain conditions.
Methanethiol is highly reactive, especially in forming thiolates and organic synthesis reactions, and it is often used to synthesize sulfur-containing compounds.
