Eucalyptus has the highest concentration (98%) of methylcinnamate, with fresh weights in leaves and branches ranging between 2-6%.
The crystals of methyl cinnamate are white or slightly yellow with a cherry like aroma. Melting point 34degC. Refractive index (nD20), 259.6degC. Relative density (d435) is 1.0700. It is soluble in ethanol (one ml per 4 mL of 80% ethanol), propylene glycol and glycerol. Mineral oils are also soluble. There are natural products in galangal, cassia and basil oils (up to 52%).
