Patchouli is used as the raw material to extract patchouli oil. The chemical compositions of patchouli originating from different regions are very different. Patchouli was brought to China from Southeast Asia during the Song Dynasty. It was planted first in Shipai, and then Tangxia in Guangzhou. Shipai Patchouli (Paixiang), also known as Shipai Paixiang, is superior to other patchouli in terms of color, scent, morphology and clinical effectiveness. It is also a recognized authentic medical material. The patchouli has the highest level of patchouli ketones, but the planting area is small. It is a patchouli called Zhaoxiang (or Zhixiang), which can be grown in Zhaoqing or Gaoyao. The volatile oil chemical type belongs to the patchouli-ketone type. This patchouli has a similar quality as Paixiang and can be used for authentic medicine. Patchouli grown in Zhanjiang in Guangdong, Leizhou, Hainan, and Wanning, Hainan, are called Zhanxiang patchouli and have volatile oil chemical types that belong to the patchoulol ketone type. Literature also reports the existence of an intermediate patchouli type, which contains a high amount of patchouli alcohol as well as patchoulol ketones. This patchouli is produced in Sihui or Yangchun. The main active ingredients of patchouli oil and patchouli alcohol, as well as patchouli ketone are all affected by the origins of these medicinal materials.
