Perillaldehyde scientific name [4-isopropenyl-1-cyclohexenyl] formaldehyde, also known as dihydrocumaldehyde, has a molecular formula of C10H14 O. It is an optically-active terpenoid with a cherry, cumin and oil-like scent. This is the aroma of perilla, tung and bergamot oils. Perillaldehyde is used in a variety of ways. It is used in the formulation of edible spices, such as lemon, spearmint, and other flavors. It can also be found in everyday chemical flavors like soaps, detergents and cosmetics. It is also used as a pesticide and agricultural sterilant.
Perillaldehyde can be used as an intermediate in organic synthesis to obtain perilla frutescens, a new food ingredient. Perillaldehyde is also used to synthesize drugs with unique medicinal properties, including anti-aging, blood lipid lowering, and anti-allergic inflammation. Recent research has shown that perillaldehyde is a unique treatment for certain cancers and tumors. It has a wide-spectrum, highly-effective, non-toxic anticancer effect. Perillaldehyde is also a plant-based preservative that has antibacterial and antiseptic properties, and can keep food fresh. 1. Antibacterial effect
Perillaldehyde inhibits the growth of Microsporum and other dermatophytes, such as Trichophyton and Epidermophyton. However, it has no effect on Candida or yeast. Perillaldehyde is the main component of Perilla leaves that inhibits fungus growth. It is also believed to have a broad spectrum antibacterial effect, which is why fresh Perilla leaf is used by many people in treating athlete’s feet and tinea.
Results of tests on bacteria and fungi using perilla leaf oils (perillaldehyde 74%), limonene 128%, and b-caryophyllene 3.8% showed that perilla volatile oils also inhibited Actinomycetes Neesenbergia, and yeast, at concentrations of 125-1,500 mg/L. Perilla leaf volatile oils (0.8 mg/L perillaldehyde 74.88%, limonene 3.82%) have a strong inhibitory effect against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus subtilis. Perillaldehyde, PA-type volatile oil and limonene have antibacterial properties.
2. Immune system function can be improved
The indexes for mice in the perillaldehyde and volatile oil groups are higher than the limonene-treated group. Perillaldehyde, on the other hand, can increase ACP activity in mouse peritoneal macroscopic cells and spleen activity more than limonene. This enhances the non-specific immune function of the body.
3. Central inhibitory effects
The odor of perilla leaves volatile oil is shown to reduce prefrontal cortex activity in humans.
