The only conjugated polyunsaturated fatty acids from plants are found in Pomegranate Seed Oil. Punicic acid is its main component, and can reach up to 80%. Punicic is also known as “super conjugated Linoleic Acid” because it is structurally similar to CLA and has a higher functionality than CLA. Pomegranate oil is rich in antioxidants and can remove free radicals and slow down aging.
It is the only conjugated polyunsaturated fatty acid derived from plants. It contains six main fatty acid: punicic, linolenic, linoleic, oleic, and palmitic acids. Pomegranate seed oil is mainly composed of 4 unsaturated fatty acid with a high content. Punicic acid is found in pomegranate oil at a range of 64% to 86%. In terms of molecular structure, punicic acid (cis-9, trans-11, cis-13-octadecatrienoic acid) is a conjugated triene unsaturated fatty acid, which is an isomer of a-eleostearic acid (cis-9, trans-11, trans-13-octadecatrienoic acid) and b-eleostearic acid (trans-9, trans-11, trans-13-octadecatrienoic acid). The two are isomers of each other, with the same double bond positions and molecular formula, but different double-bond configurations.

Pomegranate Seed Oil Production Process
•1. Pressing method Pressing method
It is a traditional oil extraction method. Its principle is to press the oil with strong external pressure to break the cells, causing the oil to flow out. The method is operated at room temperature. The obtained oil is of good quality and can maintain the original fresh fragrance, but the operation is complicated, the oil yield is low, and the obtained product is impure. It is usually turbid due to impurities such as water, mucus and cell tissue. This method is mostly used abroad.
•2. Solvent extraction method
The extraction method is to apply the principle of solid-liquid extraction. Organic solvents such as petroleum ether, ether, chloroform, etc. that can dissolve oil are selected. After soaking or spraying the oil, the oil in the oil is extracted. Using pomegranate seed ultrafine powder as raw material, ethanol-petroleum ether solvent is used to extract pomegranate seed oil, and the maximum extraction rate can reach 34.86%. The extraction rate of petroleum ether as solvent is the highest, the obtained product is pure and free of impurities, and the degree of protein denaturation in the meal is small. Some foreign scholars have also used superheated n-hexane to extract pomegranate seed oil. The optimal extraction temperature is 80°C, the average particle diameter is 0.25mm, the n-hexane flow rate is 1mL/min, the processing time is 2h, and the extraction rate can reach 22.18%, which is significantly more efficient than Soxhlet extraction and pressing.
•3. Ultrasonic assisted extraction method
The ultrasonic extraction of oil and fat is simple, with high extraction rate, short extraction time, low required temperature, and good application prospects. Petroleum ether is better as the extraction solvent. The yield of pomegranate seed oil extracted by ultrasonic enhanced organic solvent extraction through orthogonal test is 23.84%, which is higher than the 17.59% yield of pomegranate seed oil extracted by ordinary method. Ultrasonic assisted extraction of pomegranate seed oil found that the particle size of raw material crushing has a great influence on the oil yield of pomegranate seed oil. When the raw material particle size is 60 mesh, the extraction effect is best, and the oil yield can reach 29.0%. Some studies have shown that the solid-liquid ratio is the main factor affecting the ultrasonic extraction of pomegranate seed oil. When the solid-liquid ratio is 1:4~1:8, the oil yield increases significantly with the increase in the amount of extraction solvent. However, when the solid-liquid ratio exceeds 1:8, the oil yield decreases.
