Propionaldehyde is a simple fatty aldehyde organic compound with a chemical formula of C₃H₆O. Its molecular structure consists of methyl (-CH₃), methylene (-CH₂-) and aldehyde (-CHO). The aldehyde group, as its functional group, gives it typical aldehyde chemical properties, such as easy oxidation reaction to generate propionic acid, addition reaction with nucleophilic reagents, and reduction reaction to generate propanol under certain conditions.
From the physical properties point of view, propionaldehyde is a colorless and transparent liquid at room temperature and pressure, with a strong pungent smell, similar to the pungent smell of fruit or corrupted oil.
