Propyl ester is more effective and dispersed in foods containing oil and emulsified products (such as sauces, creams, and cream products) than benzoic acids. Propyl benzoate’s fragrance-fixing mechanism is not just its physical anchoring, but also its chemical stability. It forms weak hydrogen bonds or intermolecular forces with aldehydes and ketones in essence. This allows it to “pull”, these volatile components of the head and body fragrances, slow their evaporation, and improve the transition between aromas. It is a classic fixative in oriental, floral, and fuqi fragrances. It can be used in shampoos and shower gels to counteract surfactants’ bad odors and improve the sensory quality.
Its application has been refined. Propyl benzoate, a solvent in pharmaceutical formulations is also used to temporarily change the lipid composition of the stratum corneum of the skin, increasing transdermal drug absorption. As a plasticizer in polymer materials it can be used to insert between the polymer chains, weaken intermolecular force, increase mobility of chain segments and reduce the glass transition temperatures of resins. It also improves the flexibility and resistance to cold of the products. As a synthesized intermediate, the ester and substituent groups on its benzene rings are reaction sites that can be used to produce high-value products, such as liquid crystals and special monomers.
