Propyl propionate, also known as propyl propionate, is an organic compound with a chemical formula of C₆H₁₂O₂ and a molecular weight of 116.16. From the molecular structure, it is produced by the esterification reaction of propionic acid and n-propanol. The carboxyl group of propionic acid and the hydroxyl group of n-propanol are dehydrated and condensed to form an ester group (-COO-) connecting the propyl group and the n-propyl group. This structure gives it the typical chemical properties of ester compounds.
At room temperature and pressure, n-propyl propionate is a colorless and transparent liquid with a special and pleasant fruity aroma. Its boiling point is between 122-124℃, which means that in this temperature range, it will change from liquid to gas; the melting point is -76℃, and it will solidify into a solid state below this temperature. The density is about 0.881g/mL (25℃), which is lighter than water, so it will float on the water surface when mixed with water. It is slightly soluble in water, only 5 grams per liter of water at 15°C; but it is miscible with organic solvents such as ethanol and ether, and can dissolve organic substances such as grease, wax, and resin. Propyl propionate is also volatile, with a vapor pressure of about 14.3 mmHg at 25°C and a vapor density of about 4 times that of air.
