Sodium hydroxide, a highly corrosive and toxic chemical, is an essential multifunctional cornerstone of modern industrial civilization. It is used to synthesize countless chemicals, as a medium to reshape material properties in paper and textile industries and to ensure water safety. The long history of the application of sodium hydroxide demonstrates how basic chemical principles have been used to advance industrial progress and technology.
The core technology in the modern paper industry is “sulfate-assisted pulping”. This process involves mixing high concentrations Sodium Hydroxide with sodium sulfide in order to create a “white fluid”. The wood chips are heated and steamed under high pressure and temperature. This can break and dissolve almost all the chemical bonds between the phenylpropane molecules in the lignin molecule. This chemical treatment improves both the yield of pulp as well as the strength of the paper. Additionally, sodium hydroxide also acts as an important etherification catalyst for the production cellulose derivatives like carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), widely used in food thickeners and textile printing pastes.
Sodium Hydroxide application reflects its role of an environmental protector. In municipal sewage treatment facilities, sodium hydroxide is precisely injected in order to neutralize the excess acidic substances that are produced by microbial digestion. It also maintains the pH level most conducive for microbial growth within the aeration tanks, which ensures the stability and efficiency of the biological system. In industrial wastewater containing heavy metals such as copper, lead, and cadmium sodium hydroxide is used to increase the pH level and convert the soluble heavy metals into hydroxide precipitates that are insoluble. These precipitates can then be thoroughly removed from the water by flocculation or sedimentation. As a wet desulfurization agent, sodium hydroxide can be used in flue gas treatment to produce sodium sulfite by chemical reaction between sulfur dioxide and spray. This reduces acid rain emissions.
It is fascinating to see how Sodium Hydroxide is used in everyday life. In the food industry it is used to “alkali treat” corn for corn tortillas. This can soften the husk of the corn and release niacin enhancing the nutritional value. It can also be used for cleaning, fruit peeling and decomposes the natural wax on the fruit peel. The saponification process is its classic use: sodium hydroxide, or caustic soda, undergoes a hydrolysis reaction when combined with oil. This produces sodium fatty acids (i.e. Hard soap and glycerol are the essence of traditional soap production. If potassium hydroxide (or liquid soap) is used, it will produce soft soap. This principle can also be used to synthesize various surfactants that are the main cleaning ingredients in modern synthetic detergents and shampoos.
The key to improving material performance is Sodium Hydroxide. The “silk-polishing treatment” in the textile industry involves treating cotton yarn or fabric with a concentrated sodium hydroxide under tension. This causes cotton fibers to swell irreversibly. The cross-section of the fabric changes from waist to round, giving it a silky luster. Moreover, the fibers’ strength can be improved by up to 20% and their affinity for dyes increased, making dyeing easier and more vibrant. The “Bayer Process” is used in the metallurgical sector, particularly for the extraction of aluminium. At high temperatures, sodium hydroxide dissolves alumina from bauxite to form sodium Metaaluminate Solution. This solution is then separated from other impurities in the ore such as titanium and iron (red mud).
