1. Anti-inflammatory effect
Like many terpenes, terpenes seem to have some anti-inflammatory properties. In 2016, the Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research conducted a study to evaluate the efficacy of a combination of terpenoids and the popular anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac.
The team injected low doses of both substances into mice with inflamed and painful back PAWS. They found that the combination effectively reduced swelling and discomfort in the rats. This finding may have important implications for clinical practice.
By increasing the effectiveness of low doses of diclofenac, tocopherol can help alleviate some of the common side effects of the drug. For example, it may reduce the risk of stomach problems in people who take anti-inflammatory drugs for a long time.
The authors of the study concluded: “These data suggest that the combination of clinical drugs with natural products may be a pharmacological option for clinical use to avoid the expected adverse effects.
2. Antioxidant effect
Another common benefit of cannabis terpenoids is their powerful antioxidant properties, and terpenoids are no exception.
In 2015, a study in Cell Technology tested the effects of terpenoids on five healthy human volunteers. They found that low doses of vitamin D had antioxidant properties and were harmless to lymphocytes (white blood cells).
Another study in Plant Medicine in 2005 found that terpenoids can block the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. This process can lead to atherosclerosis and the development of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, terpenoids may be beneficial for heart health.
3. Calm down
A 2013 study published in the journal Nature Medicine found that inhaling terpenoids had a calming effect on mice. It is not known if it has the same effect in humans, or if it contributes to the sedative effects of certain strains of cannabis.
