The introduction of thiocarbonyl group (C=S) significantly changes the electron distribution and spatial configuration of the compound, giving it stronger polar properties and unique optical activity than the parent menthol. It is usually a colorless to yellowish liquid with a pungent odor characteristic of sulfur-containing compounds.
From the perspective of chemical raw material properties, the C=S bond length (about 1.61 A) of sulfur omenthone is significantly longer than that of C=O bond, and the bond energy is reduced (about 477 kJ/mol), resulting in the improvement of its electrophilicity and reactivity. The main chain of dimethylcyclohexane in the molecule makes it have a certain steric effect, which makes it show special regional selectivity in nucleophilic addition reaction. This compound is sensitive to light and air and needs to be kept at low temperatures in an inert atmosphere to prevent oxidative degradation.
