Tween85, also known as Polyoxyethylene Sorbitantrioleate and CAS number 9005-70-3, is a nonionic detergent. Its molecular formula is C60H108O8*(C2H4O)n, molecular weight is about 428.6, it is an amber oily viscous liquid at room temperature, has a fatty odor, density is about 1.00~1.05 g/mL (20), flash point is higher than 230degF (about 110), and HLB (hydrophile-lipophile balance) value is 11.0.
The compound is made by reacting Span 80 with ethylene oxide in alkaline conditions. The reaction temperature is typically maintained between 180190. Tween85 is soluble and dispersible in water and a number of organic solvents such as ethanol and ethyl-acetate. However, it is not soluble in liquid paraffin or some vegetable oils. The chemical structure of Tween 85 contains lipophilic trioleate groups and hydrophilic polyoxyethylene chain. This gives it excellent emulsification.

1. Petroleum Industry
Tween85 is used in the treatment of crude oil, drilling fluids and oil extraction. Its hydrophilic-lipophilic balance value (HLB=11) enables it to effectively stabilize oil-water emulsions, reduce crude oil viscosity, and improve fluidity, thereby reducing pipeline transportation resistance and preventing equipment scaling. It is also used on metal surfaces as a cleaning agent and corrosion inhibitor to remove oil stains.
2. Pharmaceutical Industry
Tween85 is used in pharmaceutical preparations as an emulsifier and solubilizer. It is commonly used to stabilize injections of emulsions and solubilize poorly-soluble drugs, such as fat-soluble vitamins. Tween 85 is suitable for injectable, topical, and oral preparations due to its low toxicity.
3. Cosmetics and Personal care
Tween85 is used as a O/W emulsifier (oil in water) to stabilize the mixed system between oil phase and liquid phase. The wetting and dispersing qualities of Tween 85 are used in sunscreens and makeup removers to improve the uniform distribution and absorption of active ingredients.
