Sucrose Octaacetate (CAS 126-14-7): Industrial Sourcing Guide — What to Ask Before You Order

The Fragrance Batch That Smelled Wrong

A perfumer in Switzerland was qualifying a new source for Sucrose Octaacetate (CAS 126-14-7). The GC purity came back at 98.5% — acceptable. But the smell evaluation said something else. There was an off-note, faint but detectable, that wasn’t in their reference standard.

GC-MS pinpointed a trace of a related ester at 0.3%. Below the purity threshold, above the olfactory threshold. This doesn’t show up in standard QC unless you’re specifically looking for it.

For fragrance applications, GC purity is necessary but not sufficient. Odor evaluation against a reference standard is the real test. Most commodity ester suppliers don’t think about this because most of their customers don’t ask for it.

Applications and Purity Requirements

Ester compounds generally serve multiple markets: fragrance and flavor at the high end of purity requirements, synthetic chemistry as reagents or intermediates, and industrial applications where technical grade is sufficient.

⇒Sucrose Octaacetate fits into this picture as

For flavor and fragrance use: FEMA/GRAS status check, odor purity beyond just GC data, lot-to-lot consistency.

For synthesis use: reagent-grade purity, specific impurity profile (especially acid content, water, residual alcohol), and storage stability data.

What to Check Before Approving a New Supplier

Three things that separate reliable ester suppliers from ones that cause problems:

One: do they run GC routinely on production batches, or only on samples? If it’s samples only, there’s a risk that production batches vary without detection.

Two: what’s their process for handling batches that fail release criteria? The answer tells you how seriously they take QC.

Three: can they provide retention samples? If something goes wrong with your production, you need the ability to go back and test the original material.
